Gustave Moreau

I'm currently reading a book on Classical, Norse and Celtic Mythology, and am so inspired! As a wonderful bonus, the myths are accompanied by some incredible illustrations and paintings.

The following artworks are all by Gustave Moreau - his subject matter was largely based on Classical Mythology or Biblical references. The top image was the one that fascinated me - it depicts Zeus and Semele (but named "Jupiter and Semele" - Jupiter being the Roman name for Zeus). Semele, encouraged by Hera - Zeus's wife - persuades Zeus to reveal himself in all his splendour. When he appears before her as the radiant god of thunder and lightning, Semele is consumed by flames.
