Art Gallery visit

The boys and I visited the South Australian Art Gallery today, and we all came away with new favourite art.

William was drawn in by this:

Persecuted Lovers by Arthur Boyd

Jacob was enamoured with the skulls in this (but I think failed to see the significance of the artwork)

United Spectre by eX de Medici (available here)

And I felt overawed by this:

Virgin and Child by Bouguereau

I'd love to visit again soon, at a slightly less break neck speed!

Front Page

What a lovely surprise to wake up to the news I had been on the Front Page of Etsy!

The lovely Eleanor from StudioElan (who's work I covet!) featured my Rosewater and Pistachio necklace in this stunning list. Thank you!

Soft, lush and romantic. I happened to be listening to Sigur Ros as I made these lovelies, and I noticed that one particular song - Svefn-G-Englar - just "felt" like these earrings. I was delighted when I looked up the meaning - it's literally "sleepwalkers".

I was even more delighted when I found this amazing filmclip on youtube:

Petite, smooth briolettes of palest blue mystic quartz sway at the base of these detailed earrings. Hanging from columns of wirewrapped white topaz ovals, and topped with ornate Balinese silver ear wires, these also feature sweet wirewrapped charms of freshwater pearls - in ivory and mauve - and soft green fluorite rondelles. These were oxidised deeply in an organic fashion, and then rubbed back slightly. The dark silver is simply stunning against the muted palette of gems and pearls.

These measure a dramatic 7.7cm or 3" in length.

Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth - both physical and spiritual wealth. Her devotees worship her for her grace, beauty and charm. She also represents fertility, light, generosity and courage - a benign and loving deity.

These decadent earrings have been created around the light blue chalcedony coins. A frame of wire, which was wrapped with rubies, houses two tiers of fine sterling chain, with additional mini tassels of chain to either side of the design. Violet-blue petite briolettes of iolite swing next to teensy coordinated rubies, which punctuate the sweeping tendrils of chain. My hand forged ear wires complete the elaborate design, which has then ben oxidised heavily, and rubbed back lightly.

This extravagent design measures 8.1cm or 3.2".

You can see more photos of this design here in my Etsy store.

Egon Schiele

I just finished a fantastic book about Egon Schiele (1890-1918) by Lewis Crofts, "The Pornographer of Vienna". Schiele was an Austrian Expressionist that I previously did not know of terribly well, but I have always been in awe of his work. The very caricature of a starving artist, he even endured imprisonment and had his work destroyed on charges of "seduction and abduction". (These charges were later dropped, and he was sentenced to 30 days in prison on the lesser charges of "exhibiting erotic drawings in a place accessible to children").

Schiele's work concentrated on the seedier aspects of Vienna during the decline of the Habsburg Empire, which outraged both the public and art critics. He died 3 days after his pregnant wife's demise during the 1918 flu epidemic.
